FDA Makes New Recommendations on Contact Lens Solution Labeling
June 18th, 2009 meg
The FDA has convened a workshop to develop consensus on test methods for evaluating contact lens solutions.
Based on the workshop and a meeting of advisors, the FDA is developing manufacturer guidelines on potential labeling improvements for these products.
The advisory panel for ophthalmic devices made specific recommendations, including a discard date on their products, in addition to the usual expiration date. The discard date is the date the solution should be thrown out after opening.
The panel also concluded that there is still improvement in lens care when using a rub-and-rinse regimen as compared to a rinse-alone regimen, which some manufacturers market as a “no-rub” solution.
