The Food and Drug Administration is being asked to investigate the use of bisphenol A in medical devices.
Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro is urging the FDA to take the same action as the Canadian health administration in calling for an investigation into the use of BPA.
Recent studies have linked the use of this additive to plastics which make them more flexible and shatter-resistant to behavioral problems in children. BPA is commonly found in most baby bottles.
DeLauro asked the FDA’s Science Board to expand its current investigation into the plastic additive.
The FDA has said it will hold public hearings concerning BPA this fall. Regulators are compiling lists of products which contain BPA and several makers of plastic bottles and leading retailers have set timetables to eliminate its use in its products or stock.
