$10 Mil Fine for Medtronic Lawyers

Lawyers for medical device maker Medtronic Inc. have been fined $10 million for their conduct in a patent infringement case, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reports.
A U.S. District Court Judge says lawyers for Medtronic – from the New York firm Dewey & LeBouef – “elected to proceed with a defense that threatened to mislead and confuse the jury” and tried to take advantage of the case’s complex nature.
Medtronic lost this case and was ordered to pay a $226.3 million judgment to Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy division last year. Medtronic must also pay a portion of plaintiff’s attorney fees for their deceptive tactics that unnecessarily prolonged court proceedings.
