Baxter COLLEAGUE Infusion Pumps Defective Again
November 15th, 2007 amy
Baxter’s COLLEAGUE infusion pumps may be defective under certain conditions, the company warns. The company, per a letter issued to its Canadian customers, has received at least three reports of the infusion pumps malfunctioning and not infusing. The company is working on a software solution to remedy the problem. Meanwhile, Baxter is warning not to use the third channel of the pump or to have a backup single channel device on hand for therapy requiring use of all three channels.
The COLLEAGUE infusion pumps have been problematic since 2005, when in February Baxter recalled the pumps because they were shutting down unexpectedly and thus not delivering medication flow properly. Prior to the recall, three people died and six were injured to the defective pumps. By October 2005, a revised product was reissued. These products were later recalled again after quality control inspectors learned that the pumps might have been returned to customers unrepaired.
