Mentor ObTape Vaginal Sling Causes Life-Threatening Infection, Atlanta Women Sue
November 14th, 2007 amy
A group of Atlanta women are suing the makers of the Mentor ObTape Vaginal Sling, a surgically implanted device which is supposed to help women with bladder incontinence, because of the pain and repeat surgeries they endured because of this defective medical device. Rather than helping these women avoid embarrassing bladder leaks, the Mentor ObTape Vaginal Sling actually caused chronic pain, infections, abscesses, bloody discharges and cellulites.
These Atlanta women aren’t the first to complain of such serious complications to the Mentor ObTape Vaginal Sling. The device was taken off the market in 2006 for doing more damage than good, but not before causing some seriously uncomfortable complications to many women.
In 2006, the Journal of Urology publicized the widespread injuries caused by this brand of vaginal sling. In this study, more than 13% developed vaginal extrusions. 8% developed a chronic discharge. One patient developed an abscess on her thigh that tracked to the incision site. This study compared patients to women implanted with other brands of vaginal slings. Women implanted with other brands didn’t suffer any of these complications.
